What You'll Be Doing

As a Commercial HVAC Service Technician, you'll troubleshoot, service, and repair a variety of commercial and industrial HVAC equipment while working directly with customers and our service team.

Your responsibilities will include:

Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair commercial and industrial HVAC systems
Work on equipment including rooftop units, boilers, chillers, and related systems
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control-system issues
Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation
Complete accurate service reports and job documentation
Communicate clearly with customers, dispatch, and other team members
Ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with applicable codes and standards
Maintain an organized, clean, and job-ready company vehicle
Properly maintain tools, equipment, and materials
Use company service software and technology to manage calls and documentation
Work independently in the field while knowing the office team is there to support you

What We're Looking For

4-6 years of commercial HVAC service experience, or comparable experience
Strong understanding of commercial HVAC mechanical systems, ductwork, and piping
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities
Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of service calls
Able to work effectively as part of a larger service team when required
EPA Universal Certification preferred
Valid driver's license with a clean or reasonably clean driving record
Comfortable using technology, or willing to learn our systems
Dependable, accountable, professional, and detail-oriented
Strong communication and customer-service skills
Willing to complete a background check and drug screening

Position Summary

The Commercial HVAC Service Technician is a field-focused technical role responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and associated control equipment. The role emphasizes execution of established procedures, use of diagnostic tools, adherence to safety and regulatory requirements, and documentation of service activities. The technician’s primary objective is to ensure equipment uptime, safe operation and compliance with company quality standards within assigned service territories and customer facilities.

This document defines the objectives and key results (OKRs), key performance indicators (KPIs), the problems the role resolves for internal and external customers, and the principal skills, abilities and knowledge required to perform effectively.

Objective: Maximize customer equipment uptime and operational reliability.\n

Problems Solved (Internal and External Customers)

External customers: Restore HVAC system operation to meet tenant comfort, process, and regulatory requirements; minimize business disruption and energy waste by timely diagnosis and repair; provide field-level verification of system performance following repairs or installations.
Internal customers (dispatch, account management, operations): Deliver reliable status updates and accurate time-to-complete estimates; maintain accurate parts consumption records and system condition notes that support invoicing, warranty claims and engineering analysis; escalate unresolved or systemic failures to engineering/management with clear diagnostic evidence.

Core Responsibilities

Perform installation, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting and repair of commercial HVAC equipment (rooftop units, chillers, boilers, air handlers, VAV boxes, controls and related systems) following manufacturer procedures and company standards.
Execute preventive maintenance work orders according to schedules and checklists; verify and record operational parameters and test readings.
Diagnose electrical, mechanical and controls faults using multimeters, clamp meters, refrigerant gauges, combustion analyzers, hand tools and diagnostic software; implement corrective actions within scope.
Document all work performed in the company work-order system including fault codes, root cause analysis, parts used, test results and customer-signed verification where required.
Adhere to all applicable safety, environmental, refrigerant-handling (EPA Section 608), and regulatory requirements; maintain personal protective equipment and contribute to safe jobsite practices.
Maintain service vehicle, tools and stock levels; report low or defective tools/parts to supervisor; participate in inventory audits.
Escalate complex or recurring failures, warranty issues and potential safety hazards to lead technicians, engineering or management with recommended next steps.
Coordinate with customers and internal stakeholders to schedule access, explain required repairs, and verify satisfactory completion of services.

Key Skills, Abilities and Knowledge Required

Technical knowledge: Practical understanding of HVAC refrigeration cycles, air distribution, hydronics, combustion systems, electrical control circuits, and building automation controls (BMS/PLC/RTU controllers).
Diagnostic skills: Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, sequence-of-operations documents and manufacturer technical bulletins; proficiency with multimeters, clamp meters, refrigerant gauges and diagnostic software.
Mechanical skills: Competence in safe handling of refrigerants, brazing/soldering, mechanical fastening, pump and fan service, and field calibration of sensors and actuators.
Regulatory and safety compliance: Knowledge of OSHA best practices, EPA refrigerant certification (Section 608), local codes and permit processes relevant to commercial HVAC work.
Documentation and communication: Clear, timely completion of service reports and the ability to communicate technical status and recommendations to customers and internal teams.
Time and workload management: Ability to prioritize tasks, meet SLA targets and manage parts/tool inventory on assigned vehicle.

Typical Qualifications and Experience (for role clarity)

High-school diploma or equivalent; completion of a technical HVAC apprenticeship, trade school program, or equivalent field experience preferred.
Relevant certifications: EPA 608 Type II/Universal; HVAC technician certifications (e.g., NATE) preferred when applicable to job scope.
Minimum 2–5 years of commercial HVAC field service experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) recommended for full competency expectations.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for operation of company service vehicles.
